Okay.... the Ruby Road Xmas episode was already too directed at kids, maybe because of Disney's involvement... although that makes no sense since Disney makes plenty of adult stuff.
But after watching the 2nd episode? Enough is enough. if it keeps like this the whole season, they screwed up Doctor Who. going to keep an open mind, but really disappointed after episode 2.
LOVE NCUTI.
Am starting to hate Davies. These scripts (4 in technically) suck. He's turning the Doctor into some Disney nonsense instead of writing true Doctor Who for Ncuti. It's insulting to both the actor and the fans. AND I've tried, but I HATE the Ruby character. Four episodes in and there's been no real development of the Doctor, Ruby or their relationship. Tells us the character and/or the actress are the wrong pick for the show.
HATING this though. If this garbage is because of Disney, find a new American partner, like Paramount Plus or Max or Starz. At least then it could be the cutting edge we expect.
PS. That religious punt in 4 (3 by the non special count) could've been more subtle. The priest collars were over the top. it could've been written in better or left out completely. Either Disney is ruining the Doctor or Davies has hit his creative limit with the Doctor. I'm leaning towards Disney messed this up.
Rating this an 8 as it stands right now with just the one season and the handful of specials. I will say that I am glad to have Russel T Davies back as writer and showrunner as he has been able to breathe some life back into a show I truly thought had run it's course. This season had it's ups and downs, when it was good it was really good but when it was bad it was almost unwatchable. To me 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble were the true stand outs of this season as they were both quirky and gut wrenching. I will be continuing when they release more episodes.
ENOUGH WITH THE RUBY SUNDAY CRAP.
Another entire episode dedicated to her with no Doctor at all.
I'm going to hold off until the 2nd and 3rd episode, but the "Star Beast" episode sucked. From degrading women by saying women know how to "let it go" at the end, like women aren't allowed to hold onto what they have without losing it, to changing the "cute" face to a "mean" one, because if something looks cute it can't possibly be nasty. I just hope this isn't a sign of crappy episodes to come.
The Star Beast episode 1/10. Better do way better than a furbie and lame memory comeback with a bunch of words referencing old episodes going forward, let alone leaving the daughter and hubby?!? Leaving hubby? Nothing new, but leaving the daughter? BULL.
Makes no sense why they insist on rebranding this as a new show. Just making it even more confusing for new watchers.
EDIT: After the first few episodes - not really on board yet with the writing and stories so far. BUT Ncuti and Millie are absolutely fabulous and amazing.
The first two episodes of this series (not the specials, but the proper series) had me considering abandoning the show. The tonal shift was so jarring and no one seemed to be taking it seriously. It got better starting with the third episode and I'm glad I stuck it out. As always, it takes time to adjust to a new Doctor, this time was just a lot more rough than usual.
You gotta be a reeeeeal hater - or maybe just a bigot - to vehemently dislike this. Unless this takes a serious turn in the last half of the season, I'm having a lot of fun. (I watched a lot of previous Who and after a point, it was just miserable. There's a place for serious and silly both in television, for sure, but I'm glad to see a lighter tone for this series overall.)
