Tonally, I found “Sunflower” took a bit of getting used to. At its core, it is a romantic tragedy, but it also gets very schmaltzy and melodramatic in places, and sometimes there is even slapstick humor. Sophia Loren is quite strong, but that wasn't enough for me to get used to the overly sentimental story. There are certainly films that deal with the subject of war trauma in a much more profound way.
