This impressionistic portrait of the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics pays as much attention to the crowds and workers as it does to the actual competitive events. Highlights include an epic pole-vaulting match between West Germany and America, and the final marathon race through Tokyo's streets. Two athletes are highlighted: Ethiopian marathon runner Abebe Bikila, who receives his second gold medal, and runner Ahamed Isa from Chad, representing a country younger than he is.

Japanauary2025 Film #7 - Tokyo Olympiad (1965)

Olympic Films are always very interesting because they give you a snapshot of what was of significance to the host country and the film makers.

Somethings that jumped out at me…
1) The US and Canadian delegations wore Cowboy hats.
2) This was the first Olympics broadcast in Color and via Satellite around the world.
3) The Japanese woman’s Volleyball team beat the Soviet Union team for the Gold Medal
4) The Japanese (along with Germany and Bulgaria) were banned from the 1948 London Olympic Games

On the Criterion Channel there is over an hour of additional footage in the extras and a commentary.

I really enjoyed watching this documentary and I am looking forward to watching other installments.

Reminded me of an NFL films-style presentation, and I watched a beautiful restoration. This was all fine, but my problem with both this and Olympia is that I've just never been much of an Olympics person.
