We always knew they were coming back. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. Data, Brent Spinner! Loved him in this movie. This was the best sci-fi, war movie in 20 years. The first 45 minutes were rough as the characters were developed. The lack of Will Smith cost about 100 million at the box office. But the action and geeky sci fi kept me glued to the screen. Draining the lizard and giving the bird to the aliens was perfect, sorta like a Will Smith tribute. And the ending, that was brilliant. I can't wait to see us "kick some serious alien butt."

Well, I don't know why everyone is hating this movie so much. In my opinion, this is quite a good sequel, especially since it accounts for the 20 years inbetween the first and the second movie. And they managed to bring a lot of the original cast back.

How quickly time flies... In 2016, I thought it was bad and overkill.
In a rewatch in 2025, it's not so bad after all.
It's visually well-executed, well-cast, and offers a solid sci-fi story.
My problem is the unnecessary long-windedness, the required background knowledge, and the complex plot on far too many levels.
In 2016, I already found it difficult to remember exactly what happened 20 years earlier. I praise the integration of old characters, but the complex expansion of the original characters and the backstories of the new cast plus supporting cast goes beyond the scope.
After countless rewatches, I now understand who is who, what their relationships are, and how everything fits together.
For newcomers or the typical viewer who just wants to enjoy the film, this is too much.
Additionally, the film was released in a time that is massively different from today's world, which, for me, increases the entertainment value and even makes the film better.
I expressly praise equality, united cooperation for the good of the planet, international cooperation, and the view of all humanity as one people with a shared, global patriotism; they're beautiful to watch and give hope.
Sci-fi at its best, albeit long-winded and with a patriotic kitsch factor as sticky as maple syrup.
Hence, a re-rating of 7/10

They probably should have waited until Will Smith was available. His character was the best pilot. Yet, he was killed off screen during an alien ship test run ?

My main problem with this movie is that Will Smith is not in it. Without him it feels like a remake/reboot, not a sequel. Despire the effects and stuff it's just nah.
