Witness for the Prosecution

Sir Wilfred Robarts, a famed barrister is released from the hospital, where he stayed for two months following his heart attack. Returning to the practise of his lawyer skills, he takes the case of Leonard Vole, an unemployed man who is accused of murdering an elderly lady friend of his, Mrs. Emily French. While Leonard Vole claims he's innocent, although all evidence points to him as the killer, his alibi witness, his cold German wife Christine, instead of entering the court as a witness for the defense, she becomes the witness for the prosecution and strongly claims her husband is guilty of the murder.

Surprisingly good. What Wilder and company played for laughs, Gibson and his team played straight, and it was thoroughly effective. Diana Rigg did a nice job of creating her own subtle version of what was clearly Marlene Dietrich's interpretation of Christine. While Ralph Richardson and Deborah Kerr lack the chemistry of Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester, both bring depth and craft to their roles.

As I haven't seen the original version, I can't speak for it. But I really enjoyed this version as the story is engrossing. I also thought this film put together a great cast as well, as Donald Pleasence is almost a pleasant watch in anything. Diana Rigg is great and gives what might be one of the performances in her career.Ralph Richardson does a great job and is the comedic glue as a lot of the funnier moments involve his character and his stubbornness.
