Game of Thrones S2 — Season 2

The cold winds of winter are rising in Westeros...war is coming...and five kings continue their savage quest for control of the all-powerful Iron Throne. With winter fast approaching, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by the cruel Joffrey, counseled by his conniving mother Cersei and uncle Tyrion. But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. Meanwhile, a new leader is rising among the wildings outside the Great Wall, adding new perils for Jon Snow and the order of the Night's Watch.

This season isn’t as good as season 1. It has the best episode of the show so far though, which is episode 9. This season is at its best when showcasing the politics of Kingslanding, and specifically, the scenes with Tyrion. The Theon/Greyjoy stuff and the scenes with Stannis are often quite boresome, although I wouldn’t call them bad. I just found that season 1 was a bit more intriguing and then the shock factor of Ned being killed made it special. The Kingslanding stuff this season is definitely much better than in season 1, but pretty much everything else was better last season.

Season 2 mostly deals with the ramifications of Season 1's ending, and I think they did really well. There are a lot of moving parts to this story, more than I've ever seen from a TV show before, and I admit, it is kinda hard to follow at times. But over the course of the season, you start to get a feel for everyone involved in the story, and it becomes easier to understand. I do think I like Season 2 a little more than Season 1.

The first half is quite slow, but it gets much better with the last few episodes. Intersting how the climax is again in the penultimate episode, with the season finale being pretty quiet in contrast. Jon's story arc is still pretty dull, while against all expectations the Arya/Tywin scenes were pretty good.

The scenes with Arya were my favourite this season, there were some surprisingly moving scenes featuring other characters too, thout the beginning episodes seemed weaker or less engrossing.

Maybe it's the rating this show recieves everywhere or the massive amount of awards it's collected throughout it's run that had my expectations very high. But after the second season I stand behind my comment from S1: it's good but I've yet to be impressed by it. This is (so far) not the kind of show where I absolutely want to see the next episode. I am not glued to my chair while watching. There are only two kind of characters: the one's I don't like and the ones I don't care about. There still is none I really like. Some are interesting but that's it.
By no means I am calling this a bad show. Just one that could turn out to be not for me.
