Buffy the Vampire Slayer S2 — Season 2

New vampires Spike and Drusilla come to town along with the new slayer, Kendra Young, who was activated as a result of Buffy's brief death in the season one finale. Xander becomes involved with Cordelia, while Willow becomes involved with witchcraft and Daniel "Oz" Osbourne becomes a werewolf after being bitten by a young cousin who just happens to be a werewolf. Buffy and the vampire Angel develop a relationship over the course of the season, but Angel's dark past as the evil and sadistic Angelus threatens to destroy Buffy and the world.

"I Only Have Eyes For You" is my favourite episode this season.

I had forgotten this was the first time we got to see flashbacks of Angel's past. I like how they start to really world build and deepen Angel's character.

Also, Spike. Forever my fave.

As with season 1, also in season 2 Buffy is not (yet!) a great series, but Season 2 is worth watching it, so you can follow the story of the later seasons...

Average episode rating for this season: 7.181818…

There are a lot of great episodes in this season. A number of not-so-great ones, too, but I found that the average was good enough that it kept me wanting to continue watching. (And the only reason I had a big gap between episodes 20 and 21-22 was because I wanted to make sure I could watch both parts of the season finale in one sitting.)

In its second season Buffy the Vampire Slayer builds a deep and rich mythology. While the show continues the monster-of-the-week format, it also continues to have a seasonal “Big Bad.” This season's arc follows a pair of vampires named Spike and Drusilla who come to Sunnydale and seize power in the wake of the Master’s death. And while the over-arcing story is well-written and remarkably compelling, there are several duds in the monster-of-the-week episodes. Recurring guest stars James Marsters and Juliet Landau make for wonderful additions to the cast and have incredible onscreen chemistry, both with each other and with the other cast members. Seth Green is also added to the cast in a recurring role, and brings a new dynamic to the established character relationships. Season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer attempts to develop the series into an epic saga, and delivers some of the most riveting and compelling storytelling in television.
