Malcolm X

Wow, just watched this movie for the very first time.

It's freaking awesome!

As piercing and relevant today as it was almost two decades ago, Malcolm X is an unflinching character portrait that shows every bit of what made Malcolm a great man and a revolutionary, never demonizing him but also never flattening him. Denzel does his evolution so seamlessly; the Malcolm at the end of the movie is so different from the one at the beginning, and yet they feel like the same man. That is anchored by his performance; his wry little smile in his final scene is pitch perfect. And when Spike Lee is on, the brother is _on_. His searing, confrontational style was made for this film. You are going to reckon with it, dammit. And reckon with it I did. I've always had Malcolm's autobiography on my to read list, but this film instantly compelled me to finally get it, because it so thoroughly displayed the man's importance, eloquence, passion, and heart. I can think of no higher praise than that.

Denzel's acting was so good I sometimes mistake him for the actual Malcolm X.

This is a well made film and Denzel is great. The story is interesting. It is really long and there are quite a few slow and boring parts.

It's ironic. I love Denzel Washington. I am also quite fond of Malcolm X, not necessarily that I agree with his entire philosophy. I think in many ways that he did a great dis-service to the black community by leading many astray from the truth and love of Jesus Christ, and into a chapter of Islam that most fundamentalists would consider heretical and inconsistent with the teachings of Muhammed.

All that aside, Malcolm X was more true to his mission and authentic to his cause that many of the other voices in his time, especially Martin Luther King, Jr.

I didn't care too much for this movie, simply because it just wasn't as honest as I thought it would be. Malcolm X said many controversial things that were powerful, true, accurate, and that were completely omitted from this film... Especially of that SPECIFIC group of so-called "whites" that no one ever seems to focus on. X knew exactly who owned the liquor stores, the bad food stores, and did everything in their power to destroy the black community as they also do to the white community. keeping us in hatred of each other and too afraid to speak the truth in righteousness together as brothers and sisters in a struggle against our enemies.

It's a good movie. But for God sakes, know who the man really was before watching it.

One of the most radical film ever made in Hollywood. The hate Spike Lee gets is not gratuitous.
Imagine the conservative outrage if it came out today!

I don't remember the last time I watched the movie, but watching it after reading the autobiography might change my rating from 10/10 to 9/10 or less.
The struggle is too minimized, they kind of represented a too aggressive picture of him, some of the important quotes were interpolated. His siblings and most importantly Ella and Wilfred were completely removed from the biopic script, I don't understand why they certainly had huge impact on his life.
I wish they could've gave more attention to the chapter where he got to know the true Islam, and I wish they mentioned the part where he met king Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

Ultimately, a great worth watching movie that is one my all time favorites, I strongly recommend the book though.
