Truly a masterpiece. The kind of film that seems like it should bore you or feel slow but doesn’t. Perfectly captures the feelings of yearning and helplessness in life.

Really fascinating. A bit too over the avant-garde edge for my personal taste, but also I haven’t been able to get it out of my head for the past few weeks. River Phoenix is a true revelation, and Keanu Reeves holds his own as well. Movies made in the PNW always make my heart ache, and this one was no exception. This will be one to return to in the future, perhaps after I’ve read Henry IV.

>"The achievement of this film is that it wants to evoke that state of drifting need, and it does. There is no mechanical plot that has to grind to a Hollywood conclusion, and no contrived test for the heroes to pass."

Like a break up when you don't realize you're crying, this isn't a story, it's a feeling.

Normally I'd give a little summary here, but who really cares about the plot of Van Sant flicks? What's important is everything except the fact that this is based on Shakespeare's Henry IV.

You see...

Gus Van Sant movies are passageways to emotions I'd forgotten were in me. I love him as a director because we see eye to eye on the seemingly nothings that are in fact truly somethings.

[Thank God Paris cinemas are running out of movies with which to fill their screens so they're releasing everything and I got to see this in the theaters.]

a very specific kind of film, for a very specific kind of mood. experimental in its structure, but universal in its feeling. immensely captivating performances by the two leading actors.
