When I was a child, I saw this on TV. This is nostalgic for me. I love it, a lot.
Totally original genre, a kung-fu parody sport comedy, that uses over-exaggeration, self-deprecation, ridiculous nonsensical situations, slapstick and CG to create hilarious scenes. My favorite scenes were the first match with the wrench-dropping handhake and the chicks with the mustaches and goatees. Dem girls still sexy with that swag. =P The romance was cute too with a nice little ending.

'Shaolin Soccer' is amusing! As someone who loves both film and football (soccer), it was about time I checked this one out. Of course, it holds little resemblance to actual footy but it still mixes the sport and the martial art impressively. It's funny, especially across the first half.
I would say that the film overstays its welcome slightly, it does feel drawn out by the time that final match concludes. That isn't all that damaging mind you, because I'd consider this a fun time. Stephen Chow is entertaining, as are the rest of the cast to be fair; mostly so, Wong Yat-fei.
A great climax, slow start, solid comedy & great directing makes this a good watch.
Funny how the best soccer movie of all time is Chinese, its genre is Comedy and there is plenty of "Kung Fu" or the funny equivalent of it. It is unique and quite different from most western comedy movies and that makes for a pretty funny and nonsensical movie, especially since it doesn't take itself seriously.
Years removed from his heyday, a disgraced former soccer star recruits a squad of mystically powerful kung fu masters to bend the rules and dominate the game in his stead. Or, perhaps, it's the masters who have recruited him to lend their dispirited old crew a unified sense of direction. Either way, the fruits of their partnership are awfully juicy.
Starring Stephen Chow, whose zany, effects-reliant fighting style would later make Kung Fu Hustle such an unexpected delight, it's a film that insists you flip the switch on your brain for a while and just enjoy the inanity of the moment. The action scenes make no effort to hide the wires or mask the CG, which looks silly but also erases any concern about anchoring them to reality. Freed from those constraints, the sky's the limit for this creative production. It takes every opportunity to one-up previous shots with a flair for the eccentric, culminating in a recklessly destructive, cartoon-violent final match against an equally powerful outfit of genetically engineered soccer stars.
Whenever it tries to go straight and actually focus on storytelling, Shaolin Soccer is a total disaster. Every stereotype about a hurried, inept overseas production rolled into one. Fortunately, we don't wait long between slices of the real sizzle - those absurdly silly effect shots - and the film's wacky, genuine sense of humor helps to balance out the rest. Stupid, stupid fun.
