"Mary" on Netflix: A Modern and Provocative Perspective
I just watched "Mary" on Netflix, and I have mixed feelings. The film offers a modern and humanized interpretation of the Virgin Mary, which I found interesting and provocative. It's not the typical religious representation we're used to.
What I liked:
* Noa Cohen's performance: I thought she did an excellent job bringing Mary to life. Her interpretation is emotional and convincing, and she manages to convey the complexity of her character.
* The modern perspective: The film addresses relevant issues for today's society, such as female strength and the struggle against adversity. I liked that they presented Mary as a strong and resilient woman, not just a passive figure.
* The production: The cinematography and soundtrack are very good. The film has a careful aesthetic and an immersive atmosphere.
What didn't convince me:
* The controversy: I understand that the film has generated controversy for its interpretation of some biblical passages. If you are a very religious person, some scenes may be uncomfortable for you.
* Creative liberties: The film takes many creative liberties, which may not be to everyone's liking, especially those looking for a faithful representation of the Bible.
* Criticism: It has received criticism from religious sectors that feel offended by the representation of the Virgin Mary.
In summary:
"Mary" is a film that invites reflection and debate. It is not a film for everyone, but if you are interested in seeing a different perspective on the story of the Virgin Mary, I recommend it. I assure you that it will not leave you indifferent.
Summary: I was expecting (Or wishful hope) that this film would accurately portray the coming of Jesus... Not even close.. It was like a broken clock, right twice a day. (Not digital clock!) If I were to rate this film on Biblical care.. It'd be a 1. Maybe a 2 for still portraying Jesus accurately. But as a film itself.. I'd say I have some positive views. The acting was good, the story was interesting, and I enjoyed it for the most part. It did run long and took unnecessary tricks to have more action though. Overall.. I'd give it a 5.5. I had to deduct points for the lack of Biblical care and the contradictions in the story. So, above an average film but below a standard good.
Pros:
• Pretty good acting honestly.
• The locations are well made
• It stays true to treating Jesus as our Lord and Savior
Cons:
• The film really doesn't need to exist. It's just a fan fiction pretending to be Gospel.
• Contradictions to the Gospel such as their foreknowledge of Mary's role in Salvation.
• It ignores very easy points of Gospel such as Elizabeth during the angel's convo with Mary. But they bring her up later on.
• The whole father drama makes no sense. The man is a huge believer in the angel and yet he's the one who didn't believe her? Though, he gets over it quick.
• So, they just ignore Joseph's entire history in the film. No one found out about the pregnancy as scripture suggests. Joseph found out and was going to divorce her quietly to not shame Mary. Then Gabriel came to tell him the truth of the matter which Joseph returned to her.
• They changed Joseph's narrative just for the final act to be action and to have Mary's dad die.
• Herod orders to kill every male infant then immediately tells his troop to bring the Savior alive... Like, my man.. What's the point in killing the infants?
Netflix’s _Mary_ is a fairly well-made biblical drama (though not very biblically accurate). The story follows Mary of Nazareth, from her prophesied birth to her call to service to her giving birth to the Jewish messiah. Unfortunately the film is based more on Orthodox tradition than Scripture, and bizarrely becomes a straight-up action film in the third act. And as a result, the point of the story is lost in the film's efforts to make Mary and Joseph extraordinary people. Still, the acting's good and the production values (sets, costumes, music, etc.) are all quite impressive. While not exactly faith affirming, _Mary_ is a compelling drama that presents a rarely seen version of the nativity story.
Visually stunning, well acted but not biblically accurate.Mr Hopkins delivers an excellent performance.
**Pros:**
Mary's greatest strength is its visuals. It is a nice-looking movie with gorgeous set pieces, especially the glamour of King Herod's palace.
**Neutral:**
The audio mixing of the movie was subpar as it was difficult to hear the lines being said and I had to turn on the subtitles to make it understandable.
**Cons:**
However, this is all I can say in favour of this movie as its premise is somewhat flawed from the start. Anyone watching this movie is most likely familiar with the Bible and the story of Jesus. That fact ruins a lot of the tension and excitement that you would get from a movie because you already know exactly how the story's going to end. There are cases where the journey to get to that ending equals the ending itself, but that isn't the case here either. It was very standard telling of the story without anything interesting to make it unique. The one scene I did like was how
Joachim was at first against Joseph marrying Mary until he mentioned that the angel had guided him.
Even though this is a very by-the-book adaptation/reimagining, it still manages to leave out crucial details like how
King Herod died. We're left to assume he died from a divine heart attack in the way he just suddenly collapses out of nowhere.
No actor is Palestinian and the story is not faithful to the Bible.
A heavy disappointment. Useless creations, changing the context no more cold winters and sheep, no more emotions
Yeah because a pedicured manicured European Ashkenazi Jew doll with heavy make up is the perfect cast for this role..
Ask her what modern Jews say about Mary...
Noa Cohen Israeli model and TV host playing the mother of Jesus? You couldn’t make this shit up. Oh sorry…They did! Don’t waste your time with this
Saw that this was new on Netflix and around Christmas I thought it would be ideal to check it out. But I actually expected a lot more from it, especially from the story being more biblically familiar, but unfortunately this was not the case. I think this is a missed opportunity... The images look very good, but that's about it for me.
