The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

When 17-year-old Makoto Konno gains the ability to, quite literally, 'leap' backwards through time, she immediately sets about improving her grades and preventing personal mishaps. However, she soon realises that changing the past isn't as simple as it seems, and eventually, will have to rely on her new powers to shape the future of herself and her friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed this as I'm into any movie with time-traveling. Great story about how valuable time is.

From some reason that the bug that we saw only twice was representing the butterfly effect that Makoto was creating with her time leaps. 🐛 When she started to try and fix everything with all those time leaps I was worried that she might not be realizing that she needed to go back to the timeline where she dies in order for no one to suffer the consequences of her action. :face_with_monocle: I do thing that we should also be realizing the impact of Chiaki's words when he talks about people. People are present in large numbers, people gather and interact, he can ride a bicycle, he actually saw a running river, and most important of all he was able to witness the restoration of a painting that was made during war and famine. It felt like a source of comfort to the people looking at it. It's symbolism may have been harmful towards that agenda that future governments were trying to prorogate. I mean we all know that fear and hate fuel the dictatorships. Censorship is what they do on the front, they do it for the stuff that they can explain away, no matter how ridiculous reason they give for it. But they set fire to the libraries, the burnt the books, killed the writers and reporters, made education impossible. Hope should not be propagated and so they set fire to the painting. It is most interesting to imagine what Makoto does to keep the painting safe for Chiaki to see in the future. 🏞

This was a neat film that had me chuckling to myself at several points throughout. Although I haven't read the novel this movie was based on, I heard that it clarified a few things that were not made explicit in the movie. I'll list the big ones here (spoilers):
First off, the "Aunt" in the movie is actually the main protagonist . That's why she knows so much about time leaps and talks about her senior high crush.

The painting is so important to Chiaki because it contains the formula for time travel or is essential to the ultimate discovery of time travel.

The career path that Makato planned to take was either art restoration, so she could preserve and protect the painting, or maybe she went into the sciences to discover the secret to time travel herself.

The second idea seems more likely as the film tried to differentiate her from the Aunt. Instead of sitting around waiting, she would "come running."
Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed the story but I still think it could have tried to be slightly more explicit in the revelations they were trying to get the audience to perceive. The film was unfortunately designed in a way that makes things more difficult to understand if you were not already aware of the 1967 novel that started the many eventual adaptations. It's worth a look and if you're confused by the end of it, come take a look back here and you might appreciate some of the details of the film a little better.

Cute and entertaining, but has nothing special and adds nothing to the genre

Nice little movie. It's got your basic annoying Japanese school angst that treats teen flings like the most serious things in the world, but once you let that aside and accept it, it's a heartwarming tale.

Is not made explicit in the film but I thought it was implied that
the "aunt" is actually the main protagonist that decided to study art to restore the painting so it wouldn't be lost in the future. That's how she knows about the time leaping and why she talks about her girlhood crush
.

Quite a cute movie. I had to laugh quite a few times. What a cute but also ridiculous but still good movie. If only it would be this easy.
