The Patriot is a magnificent and compelling Revolutionary War epic. The film follows the story of Benjamin Martin, who reluctantly joins the American Revolution in order to save his family. The cast is spectacular, and includes Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs, and Tom Wilkinson. The actors all give excellent performances and have good chemistry together; which makes the story all the more dramatic and moving. Additionally, the costumes and set designs are quite elaborate and help give the film an authentic feel. And the battle sequences are breathtaking. The Patriot is a powerful and thrilling war epic that delves into the American Revolution as never before.

Probably Roland Emmerich's best film. Since it's so good, you forget he's the director. It definitely helps that you Mel Gibson seeking vengeance against a British Colonel that killed one of his sons. Since Mel is so good in revenge films.
The late Heath Ledger is also solid as his older son who blames himself for the death of his brother. Jason Isaacs steals the show though as the ruthless British Colonel.
Despite the revenge plot, I should mention the Patriot is of course a war film. Except Jason Isaacs is so good as a bastard that you just care about him getting what he deserves. More so than who wins the whole battle.

Overly patriotic (especially for an Australian depicting a n American) and grandiose at times. The movie also takes, as is typical for Mel Gibson, a lot of liberties concerning the historic trouth, in this care at the detriment of the English. Still, it is good fictional entertainment with great visuals.

A solid war movie. The cannon ball effects are brutal and Jason Isaacs is great.

Happy 4th of July everyone. What can I say? Mel Gibson is crazy but gives a hell of a performance, even if it is loosely based on facts (Seriously, his cry face is so good!!). They still got a few facts right, and even if they hadn't, it is still a good film to watch every few years.
