A Star Is Born

Esther Blodgett is just another starry-eyed farm kid trying to break into the movies. Waitressing at a Hollywood party, she catches the eye of her idol Norman Maine, is sent for a screen test, and before long attains stardom as newly minted Vicki Lester. She and Norman marry, though his career soon dwindles to nothing due to his chronic alcoholism.
Where it all began - the 1937, original, A STAR IS BORN, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March (Asolphe Menjou, May Robson, Andy Devine, Lionel Sander - all familiar faces on celluloid in that era of film). This film has been remade in every generation, 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Krisofferson, and, now, in 2018 with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Each production has its own context (movies or music industries) for the tale of a rise to fame for one and a fall for the other. This first production would have been considered a Romantic Comedy turn Drama and was nominated for 8 Oscars in 1938, two of which it won - one for best writing of an original production and the other, an honourary award, for colour production (a process just in its infancy). Even for modern audience this is a good watch for which I give it a rating of 7 (good) out of 10. [Romantic Comedy/Drama]
