i disagree with the "This movie gives transgenders a horrible name." top comment; as a trans girl.
it's a beautiful movie, no "misrepresentation" or bad look.

The Danish Girl is one of the most exquisite movies I have watched to date. A movie rarely makes me yearn to know what others think of it, but this one succeeded. I was horrified to learn how very little the world—and people—have evolved in nearly a century. Several comments, calling Lili incredibly selfish, pretentious for not being a man to his wife, or stuck-up for undergoing a reassignment surgery instead of restricting herself to female clothing, were abundant. But what came off as most offensive of all were those that referred to her as a trans man. Can people not afford to look up the basic terminology before shitting on a beautiful work of art?

Every aspect of this movie has drawn me closer to loving it all the more. Despite all the backlash surrounding it, I believe the direction is amazing. The casting could not have been any better. The shots are breathtaking, and the music score weaves in spectacularly like a gust of wind that adds magic to the scenic beauty. I seldom comment on this, but the costumes were sensational, and one could trace the ephemeral track of how that evoked Lili from the deepest trenches where Einar had buried her.

This movie portrays a moving true journey of Lili Elbe, who was born into the body of Einar Wegener. Einar and Gerda are two painters from Denmark. Eddie Redmayne excellently takes Einar's character through an epiphanic journey of how she has always been Lili. Every frame with Eddie's subtleties is quaint and romantic. It is not a selfish transformation; rather, one of apprehension, fear, acceptance, pain, and hope. Alicia Vikander, who plays Gerda Wegener, a wife madly and absolutely in love with her dear husband, paints her canvas with everything Gerda goes through as she accepts Lili. She brings to the screen such empathy as that cannot be perceived by anyone in her shoes as easily. This is not just about Lili's transformation, but also Gerda's fight to not lose her husband while she comes to terms with how he is already gone.

More often than not, true love causes pain. True love is about letting go. And this is such a story of magnificent true love.

I loved this film, I thought it was so so beautiful and delicate but I felt the need to research reviews from transgender people because only they can truly say if the way Lili's story is depicted in this is respectful or not. The reviews were mixed, but most of them seemed to agree the time its set on justifies some of the mistakes in representing the transgender experience. Most also said the movie was based more off of the novel than Lili's actual diaries and that the novel itself already fictionalized some of the actual facts of Lili's life. Still, as loosely based as this might be on the real story of Lili Elbe's life it was still such an interesting watch, painful at times too, to think how hard it must have been before - and now, still - for transgender people to deal with how uncomfortable the bodies they were born in make them. At least now, they know what is going on, I don't think before they even had a name for what they were feeling.

Acting wise, I thought Redmayne and Vikander did a wonderful job, even if some of Redmayne's scenes seem to be bordering on caricatural. Technical wise, this film is beautiful, the colour scheme is so calming, the framing is so pretty some shots look like paintings themselves.

9/10

Alicia Vikander's performance was incredible in this movie. No wonder she got an Oscar for it.
