Beautiful, mature film throughout, anchored by a devastating performance by Davis. I was surprised by the depiction here of true maternal cruelty--there's an old-school Freudian bent to it all, but even with modern eyes the characters feel real and lived-in. The forbidden romance with Henreid is soul-destroying (those cigarettes!) and even though the ending falls slightly flat for me this still ranks up there as an all-time favorite.
