Mildred Pierce

A hard-working mother inches towards disaster as she divorces her husband and starts a successful restaurant business to support her spoiled daughter.

Despite Crawford, Carson and Scott getting top billing, for me Ann Blyth's performance steals the show.
With this director and actress we expected something good and we have found a marvel, the Oscar and the well-deserved nominations.
This movie, that plays in 1945 is surprisingly applicable to our time. Joan Crawford play an extraordinary woman who becomes a successful businesswoman without the help of a man. Still an excellent crime-drama.
Very good film from one of its great directors, Michael Curtiz.
Breezy script that skips along. No boring parts. Excellent performance all round.
7/10
He had it coming, he only had himself to blame.
It's so depressing to watch a woman sacrifice so much for her ungrateful evil daughter.
That classic Hollywood lighting has rarely looked so good on someone as it does on Joan Crawford. She's radiant, and her performance here was restrained and thoughtful. The rest of the movie was..ok? It hinges on the relationship Mildred has with the evil daughter Veda, and I don't think the movie earned the machinations that revolved around that relationship. We don't know enough about Veda to understand what's motivating her behavior, and we don't learn enough about Mildred to understand why she goes to such lengths to appease Veda. I'd be interested to see the remake.
