Land of Mine

In the days following the surrender of Germany in May 1945, a group of young German prisoners of war is handed over to the Danish authorities and subsequently sent to the West Coast, where they are ordered to remove the more than two million mines that the Germans had placed in the sand along the coast. With their bare hands, crawling around in the sand, the boys are forced to perform the dangerous work under the leadership of a Danish sergeant.

This is an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Picture. It was an important story well told. Such a difficult time. Such brutality born of grief and hate and the unspeakable emotional toll of war. If only we will learn from pictures like this. The film writer laid out all the twists and turns of the human heart when it has faced the unfacable. If I may rephrase a George Santayana quote, If we cannot learn from the past we are condemned to repeat it. I give this film a 9 (important) out of 10.

The only thing I disapproved of, really, was the slightly punny title (a departure from the original "Under Sandet", which literally means 'under the sand'). Otherwise it's a gripping, minimalist look at an overlooked side of the aftermath of war, with top-tier performances from the mostly young cast, especially Roland Møller as the Sergeant, Joel Basman as one of his charges, and real-life twins Emil and Oskar Belton as two of the youngest in the squad.

The German people did not cause WWII, a minority in the Nazi party did.
This is true for almost all wars, the majority want to live in peace not go killing other people.

All movies talk about what happened in WW2. It's nice to see a movie shedding some light about what happened after WW2.
