Splice

Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named "Dren", the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.

Last time I rewatched this, I ate so much popcorn I almost threw up. It's not the movies fault per se, but like let's be honest, Splice wouldn't have even cared if I did puke. Anyway I still like it though.

The best I can say about _Splice_ is that it wasn't a "bad" movie. From beginning to end, so much of it was predictable but the story was good and the execution of it was fair. Kudos to Sarah Polley for her portrayal of "Elsa" as a woman on the edge of science who finds herself battling human emotion and maternal instinct throughout the film. Adrien Brody also did a great job and overall, I felt it was a fair enactment of a so-so story. If there was a "fatal flaw" in this, it was simply that the writers/producers didn't do enough to make "Dren" interesting enough; it seems - this is only my opinion, mind you - they could have stretched a bit and made the Dren character easier to "buy into", so to speak, so that you actually FELT something for the "being"...be it loathing, sympathy, curiousity, etc. As it was, the thing - the "Dren" character - just became (again, this is speaking only for myself) "the antagonist" or "the monster" in _Splice_. I never felt sorry for it, or fear, or hatred, or ANYTHING: it was just "there" as the focal point of the film...nothing more, nothing less. The film was an easy-enough not-quite-two-hours watch but I just felt there were several areas of improvement that could have made this so much better.

"Splice" turned out to be a disappointment. A couple of brilliant but pretentious scientists create a being that brings them closer together. Later, one of them ends up maiming and the other screwing it. So, yeah...it went there.

This could have been a smarter tale of Science sticking its syringe where it shouldn't have. Instead, it tried to be a Horror movie but wasn't scary. The ending didn't come as a surprise but it did make me wonder what the future of the being might be.

Moderately interesting concept is served up by a script that tries to imbue its characters and premise with a sense of pathos and depth, but ultimately stops short on all fronts, sacrificing all for shock value and attempts at "a hard hitting finale" in what is entirely a creature feature horro/thriller by the end.

I would have given it a 5 for what it does merely passably, but I actually wish I hadn't seen it, so that puts it in the abyss of "worse than average"/Do Not Watch.

>"If you could understand crazy, it wouldn't be crazy."

When I watch horror films with science fiction tied into it, I expect a few things: To get grossed out and to get scared. This movie did the first pretty well.

This movie is gross. How did they get Oscar Winner Adrien Brody to have sex with that creature?
