Based on Victor Hugo’s novel – though I haven’t read the book – this adaptation focuses on Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson), a former convict who, after a powerful encounter with a kind priest, decides to turn his life around. Valjean reinvents himself, becomes a mayor, and lives to help others. Eventually, he becomes the guardian of young Cosette.

His moral counterpart is Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush), a rigid and unforgiving figure who sees the world only in black and white. The two cross paths over the years in a long, tense pursuit.

The film’s message is clear and unambiguous: it tackles themes of morality, redemption, and justice in an unstable France. Yet, despite these heavy themes, the film feels strangely disengaged. It aims for emotional depth but never quite gets there – and many story beats are too predictable to truly surprise.

Recommended for those with an interest in French history, literature, or classic moral tales brought to screen.
