In the aftermath of the Great Plague and amidst the subsequent witch-hunts against women, a young widow grapples with the tragic death of her husband in a society completely consumed by fear and death. After the disappointing Hellboy reboot, Marshall is back on form here. He evokes the time period well and delivers an atmospheric take on a dark period of history. Admittedly, the ‘reckoning’ of the final third might be stretching credibility but after the harrowing events leading up to it, it was enjoyable to see it play out.
