Alice and the Mayor

The mayor of Lyon, Paul Théraneau, is in a delicate position. After 30 years in politics, he is running out of ideas and is faced with a feeling of existential emptiness. To overcome this, Paul hires a young and brilliant philosopher, Alice Heimann. Then follows a dialogue between two diametrically opposed personalities who will turn their certainties upside down.
A movie that mixes politics and philosophy looks like a French wet dream on paper, but _Alice and the Mayor_ is actually little more than mental masturbation covering a cliché office drama.
That said, Anaïs Demoustier turns in a solid performance and French flavoring Fabrice Luchini turns his idiosyncrasies down enough to reach the core of his character. Sadly, these turns take back stage to bad blocking, sub-par supporting performances and a script that loses plot lines like a balding man in a gale force storm.
