Quite a strange movie. A bit all over the place, but with good acting, some nice action, and quite the unique cinematography. Still, I enjoyed it from start to finish. But on the other hand, I understand that this is not for everyone. If you liked Shin Godzilla or Evangelion, you would love this. If you did not, then just skip it. This movie is probably not for you.

Like my youth: nostalgic and wasted.

Along with the animated Speed Racer, the original Ultraman TV series is one of the first shows I remember loving as a child, so my demands on this reboot were almost non-existent: show Ultraman, have lots of fights and be as kitsch as possible.

Yes, the movie had that but it tried to bring me more, like a pizzaiolo adding free anchovies I didn't ask for to my pepperoni pizza.

The problem with Shin Ultraman is that it's structured like a video game. It has 4 antagonists and each is tougher to defeat, but the sequence of enemies detracts from the focus of the movie and makes it feel more like a mini-series than a feature film.
Still, it did show Ultraman, it had lots of battles and it was kitsch as hell so it gets a recommend from me.

It is pretty much exactly Anno + Ultraman. While not nearly as successful artisitcally as Shin Godzilla, it's a lot of fun and perhaps the closest we've gotten to anime Anno in live-action. If I was an Ultraman fan this would likely be an 8 or 9 (or a 1, because fandom), but for me or anyone else YMMV a lot.

Shin UltraCUT - story of a director who wished to create a movie with the most camera cuts/shots/angles in the history. To displeasure of the viewers, he succeeds.

I wish the camera work was tamer. It completely ruins this movie. There are scenes that take place in one room and over 30 seconds of dialogue we're unfortunately forced to more than 30+ different shots/angles and similar amount of cuts. Strange and in the end, a very detrimental move. It takes viewers out of the story, which arguably is rather on a good side.
