On his wedding day, Joseph nervously admits that his wife is not quite like other women. But his beautiful bride is more than just the "impulsive, compulsive, obsessive" woman he thinks he knows. And when Joseph discovers she is hiding troubling secrets, it sends them both on a sexual odyssey that will either destroy or redeem their relationship.
There was one reason alone that I wanted to see this: Sheryl Lee. I was hoping for a '90s erotic drama, and while this starts there, it goes way off the rails.
I'm going to talk about the story here, and I don't consider it a spoiler, because it's simply what the movie is about. This has layers and without addressing them, there would be no review.
The movie starts as a drama about a newlywed couple, and you'd think "this is the story: it's a couple, insert hot sex scenes, add some turmoil, resolve, the end."
Nope. The heavy drama starts early, as we see they are not a happy couple already. Our couple have sexual issues, which leads us into the next layer: our husband must learn the ways of the sexual warrior, like a Luke Skywalker or Daniel LaRusso - only horny. Then you're thinking, "this must be the actual movie: this guy is going to use Eastern sex magic to please his wife."
Nope. The movie takes its final turn here, and it's dark, like really dark. See, our wife, Maria, was sexually molested as a child, and that's why the couple is having issues. Wow, just wow. When I rented this, I was just hoping for some Sheryl Lee boob, and I got some, but at what cost?
Look, there's a good story in here, and one that needs to be told, but the way this was executed. Just such an odd way to go about telling a very dark, serious story.
I can't recommend this one, it's far too clumsy. So much time wasted on sex magic, the movie needed to be told from Maria's point of view, I just can't imagine how someone thought this was the right way to tell this story.
