LOVED this movie... low-key with some laughs.
I was in Scotland in 1976 and don't remember anything about this even though I'm into golf!
Good soundtrack too.

Must watch
10/10

Much more heartfelt than expected - pleasingly so!

'The Phantom of the Open' is a very sweet film, with Mark Rylance being the absolutely perfect lead for it - great performance from him! I also enjoyed the humour, with many lines amusing me - including one that was lost in translation...

It's a great (based on a true) story, one I had somehow never heard of even as a sports (golf much less so, admittedly) fan; I did slightly recognise the name Maurice Flitcroft though. Even if you don't follow golf, it definitely works as a standalone thing and it doesn't heavily focus on the sport anyway; much more to it.

Pretty neat to see Craig Roberts direct (his third, but first I've seen) this - I remember watching him act in TV's 'The Story of Tracy Beaker' when I was a kid. Well in, Rio Wellard!

Mark Rylance knocks it out of the park - a hole in one if you will - in this charming, funny, and sometimes emotional true story.

Loved the movie, quite funny with some real heartwarming moments throughout. Some sequences felt a bit out of place to me (the dreams mostly) but this is a movie I will readily recommend to anyone.

Perhaps a bit below "The Duke", which came out at the same time, but it seems that it is because the budget for this film seemed significantly lower. But yet another very enjoyable British comedy.

A very heart warming true story. As a Lancashire lad and a keen golfer I really enjoyed this fun movie
Maurice Flitcroft was a British amateur golfer known for his unconventional and humorous approach to the sport. He gained fame in the 1970s when he famously entered the Open Championship, despite having little experience in golf. Flitcroft's first attempt at the tournament in 1976 resulted in one of the worst rounds in the history of the event, scoring a 121, but his persistence and comedic flair endeared him to many.

His story is often celebrated as an example of determination and the idea that anyone can pursue their dreams, regardless of their skill level. Flitcroft later became a symbol of the amateur spirit in golf, and his life has inspired books and films that highlight his unique journey in the sport. :thumbsup_tone1:

This movie kind of reminded me of Operation Mincemeat in that we have a story that - by itself - is really interesting. The problem is that neither had enough meat to make it worthy of a full-length Hollywood movie. This movie felt like it might have been better suited for an 8 minute piece on a show like "Mysteries at the Museum". Despite the actor's best efforts (and they really were fantastic) this one was a bit of a snoozer.
