

Crossing

Lia, a retired teacher from Georgia, learns from her young neighbor, Achi, that her long-lost transgender niece, Tekla, has crossed the border into Turkey. In search of Tekla, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi, where they explore the hidden depths of the city.
[Mubi] It manages to be a moving story without ever forcing emotion, creating a seemingly improbable bond between three characters who are mainly united by a sense of humanity that is amplified through solidarity. All three have a background that is worth exploring, although perhaps Evrim is the one that best represents that sense of positivity that reflects a film that is almost daring in its way of avoiding the commonplaces of tragedy around transsexuality. And in that sense it is a successful reflection of three human beings who each play their own particular form of rebellion among the bustling and winding streets of Istanbul.
