I didn’t expect to be so moved by an animated film with no speech or dialogue… but honestly that’s the beauty of this film… it says more than most films that have dialogue.
And the song September will have extra meaning once you see this film. And how they incorporate the song O’ Danny Boy and different neighborhoods and musical sounds and influences of New York - it superb.
I can totally see why this was nominated for an Oscar.
I reviewed this film for the Hugo-winning, Ignyte-winning blog Nerds of a Feather:

I had grit in my eyes.... But even after watching it... Half an hour and it still hits HARD..
Silent rivers run DEEP.. this is an Ocean of joy and heartache... I will watch it again.. But am in bits.. So it will have to wait.. But yeah.. Stand aside Pixar... A new KING is announced... Was going to give a 9.... But I can't fault it... So it's a 10/10..
As a certified™ deeply lonely person, this is the best portrayal of loneliness I've ever seen. The fact that not a single word was spoken makes it even more realistic.
And the god-damned ending. I was not expecting THAT.
I saw it in a venue that marketed it as a movie for children and yes, of course children enjoyed the pretty colors, character designs and funny moments, however they were quite confused with the ending. The adults on the other hand... A couple of us were battling the sniffles.
This is now the best animated movie I've ever seen. Sorry, Pixar

Robot Dreams is a slice-of-life story with beautiful animation, endearing characters, and storytelling moments that are irresistibly cute and charming but can also turn a corner and punch the audience in the gut with sustaining emotional depth. I had a smile on my face from beginning to end, except for when the film needed to be emotional and thoughtful. It may be too early to tell, but this film is a contender for one of the best animated features I’ve ever seen. This movie makes me glad that I am a movie reviewer and an animation lover. This film is a perfect example of how animation can be a medium to tell stories without dialogue or big-name celebrities. It's the kind of film that makes me wish there were more like this one. It is meant to be fun and make you think while caring about characters with raw emotional depth despite being drawings on a screen. I love this movie, and it may just be one of the best-animated films that came out in a year full of excellent animated features.
(Final Grade: A)
Robot Dreams is a touching film that, perhaps influenced by my personal situation, authentically captures the complexities of losing someone. A reflective experience on affection and loss.
_Robot Dreams_ is the kind of movie that will really re-affirm my love for the animation medium. What sets it apart for me is the storytelling style is more like an actual piece of cinema than most animations. Pablo Berger's directing chops are on full display here.
There is also a very impressive amount of detail in nearly every shot. There's obviously the city shots which have detailed backgrounds, but what really caught me off guard is a scene which depicts electronic repair. I'm no expert on that subject, but I do know enough to see that the animation team carefully studied reference material and I wouldn't be surprised if we got a true to life display of it. They didn't need to do that, the movie would've carried on just fine had they cut some corners, but they _didn't_. That is just one of the many ways _Robot Dreams_ tells me that it was a labor of love.
I have to agree with many reviews that the ending has a lot of weight, and is unexpected for a movie like this.
I'm glad this got nominated for Best Animated Feature, and I do think it should've won as well, but that's how the Academy tends to be. Regardless, this is easily my favorite movie of 2024 so far, and I hope Pablo Berger considers doing more animated projects like this, I think his presence in the genre would be very valuable.
Watched this after a breakup and this hit hard. **Not all goodbyes are because of lack of love.** And one day you'll find someone new no matter how bad the goodbye was.
