With this film, I’ve completed Rossellini’s war trilogy. I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of movies divided into chapters or episodes, and that’s the main reason I wouldn’t give it a high score — but that’s exactly why ratings don’t always work.

Paisà is a true masterpiece, both in what it tells and how it tells it. It follows Italy from South to North during the final stages of WWII, capturing different lives and moments in a raw, powerful way. Personal taste aside, it’s an essential watch for anyone who truly loves cinema.

I felt this finished stronger than it started, which perhaps reflects a need to adjust to the anthology structure, but few of the film's vignettes felt particularly compelling. Rossellini's direction is undeniable, and the neorealist themes and techniques are a powerful contrast to the Hollywood I've been watching lately from the same period. Ultimately though I appreciated the idea behind this more than the execution, although it may be one to return to in the future.
