Watching this as someone British with 'free' healthcare, I can't believe the American healthcare system is as it is, that people sit around discussing money while someone is in desperate need of medical assistance. Scary.

Granted socialist healthcare isn't all that, it's still awful to know this happens. Can't blame john q at all!

I loved this movie when I first saw it roughly 20 years ago. Is it Denzel's best movie ever? Certainly not, but he makes this plot captivating as all else. This movie manages to be an action/hostage film that hits all the emotional notes. I am not sure why this Metacritic is so low, and it is possibly one of the drama movies I have the biggest gap on in regard to review. This is a great film, and I will die on that hill!

Rating: 4.5/5 - 90% - Highly Recommend

_John Q_ is a powerful and emotional film that leaves a lasting impact. Denzel Washington delivers a stunning performance that is both heartbreaking and inspiring. The movie tackles important themes such as the American healthcare system, poverty, and the struggles of working-class families. It is a deeply moving story that will make you think and feel and is elevated by Washington's incredible acting.

>"My son is dying, and I'm broke. If I don't qualify for Medicare, who the hell does??"

This focuses on an important topic in this country. I know we don't have all the answers but it should be easier to save lives than this. While it does have an interesting premise, it is a little corny. I am bumping it by 1 point because Denzel always makes any film better.

A rewatch 20 yrs later. Denzel carries this. It's outlandish and unbelievable, but if you can put that aside the message still holds today even if it's in your face and lacks any degree of subtlety through this type of storytelling. Worth a go if only to revisit DW's acting. 6.4
