[Cannes '23] Although there is an obvious vocation to reach all kinds of audiences, this biopic is a bit outdated. It works best emotionally when it approaches Abbot Pierre from the close perspective, but becomes clumsy when trying to understand the inside of his faith, with evocative depictions that seem like something out of "What dreams may come" (1998). At times it is exciting thanks above all to a superb and moving performing of Benjamin Lavernhe, and it is more effective in the earthly contradictions of a man who tried to change humanity.
