17 year old Sean who has more chest hair than my 25 year old ass is sent to Tokyo as a PUNISHMENT just to hook up with a hot girl and drive even more races and become the new DK, all while being called a Gaijin 12391239 times and wearing stylish slippers aka. "Wabaki".
God I love that movie.
Total popular opinion. This is the BEST FF movie!
This is a fairly recent re-viewing and lots more stood out to me this time.
DJ shadow, always a win
Sarah Halley Finn!
If you didn't understand that this movie was ridiculous while being deadly serious about its directing, you missed the boat on the one.
Western showdown music cue before the race with Home Improvement kid is so absolutely inspired. It sets the home tone of the movie.
Incredible female scream before hitting the concrete pipe in the opening construction race.
So much smoking in my consumed media recently.
MC Hammer video recorder ads in Japan, let's go!
Wonderful quiet establishing shots of Japan
The HULK. Twink/ie is a fantastic character
TERIYAKI BOYS. GOAT track. Killer soundtrack in this movie.
I absolutely adore Neela.
"Does it really matter where I'm from?" nice personification early on as a brush off. Followed by her getting "abuse mad" at her man, our antagonist, using "gaijin" as a slur.
Aww, Han! 😍
Incredible audio mixing. Noticeable even as early as the parking lot event.
David Fincher-esque composite shots in the initial drift race.
Ohhhh, the cell phones.
Han eating kills me.
Cringe. There's no other word for it. This (parking lot drift race) is cringe.
You're going to jail if you don't straighten up - next track is glitch militaristic. He has to fall in line.
It's an actual green tea shot! Never realized that was more than just a flavor thing. Real tea!
Black hallway to different world color pop
This movie is largely as good of a racing movie as Speed Racer, and for the same reasons that make Speed Racer good.
Nice use of texting in class w 2003 tech
Gaijin conversation with happens 5/8ths through
The group drift sequence is beautiful
The night sequence feels like Forza Horizon felt at times
So many shots of establishing normal Japanese life things like multi tier bike racks being loaded by an extra. It's just nice to see this movie have so much of Lin's influence
You could get seriously fucked up by drinking every time a pedal shot is shown
The multi car pile up in town is glorious.
His dad's inclusion as a gateway to have this Japanese American muscle hybrid homebrew is so great. The Japanese text on the adjacent shop, after just panning up from this hybrid is also great
The final scene does the most for so long.
The highest low stakes movie ever.
Ending = My, how the turn... Tables
That one F&F movie made without Vin Diesel or Paul Walker. Because Vin Diesel thought he was too hot-shit for this franchise and the producers thought to get rid of Paul Waler and the rest of the stars as well and went low-budget. As a result, this movie is a good Car Movie on its own. However, it doesn't have the same vibe as the first and second F&F franchise movies. Especially the second movie, where they knocked it out of the park. The rest is history.
7.5/10 - IIRC this was my favorite F&F movie - even though it's kinda a spinoff. But after rewatching all movies from the beginning I might actually like the first movie more (but this one is still better than the second movie). I really like the concept of this movie but some aspects didn't feel as good as it could've been.
The begining was lime. They used to have this cool music and animations during the intro but this time they kept the standard intro, left out the F&F animations, and I didn't like the music during the opening scene.
But then comes one of the best scenes. The one that ends with Sean and his wrench :D But I don't remember the "got your back" of the rich guy's friends being so very quiet (IIRC that was louder in the German version and made it clear that they won't be of much help).
Unfortunately though, Sean is an idiot. He cannot drive but thinks he's cool and doesn't seem to really care about anything. And why would he even ask "Where is my car?" at the police station? You idiot totalled it. I'm convinced it's so badly damaged that it isn't even worth to repair it.
He does have a funny accent though :D
Twinkie is quite funny - and his ride as well :D
Neela is of course the best female character. She can drive, is hot/cute/attractive, and also fierce/determined at times. Would be nice if she was even more powerful but she's cool nonetheless.
And Han is my favorite male character. He's much cooler than Sean and yet so chilled :D It really sucks that he died... :o
I love the drifting. IMO it fits the F&F movies well and makes the scenes less ridiculous (as drifting isn't about speed / it's slower than racing).
And this is the first F&F movie with heel-and-toe downshifting scenes :) (But I didn't really hear the revs go up.)
"Life's simple, you make choices and you don't look back." - I wish it was that simple :) (But I guess it could be.) Anyway, I liked that scene!
And the best scene of the whole movie was of course the group drifting scene at night with Neela. So lovely and calming :)
And that quote about "just the moment".
And a bit later Han died. RIP, that sucked! How dare you? Don't the writers know that car's don't explode? :P
At least Sean was lucky enough to be saved by his dad.
Anyway, nice to see Dom at the end! And that "Han was family" quote of course <3
I just hope that Brian, Dom, and Mia will be back together in the next movie (that's still the best combination so far!).
{ #asianswag } || Really surprised by this one! I've enjoyed it a lot more than I expected minus the lead role, that Sean guy wasn't even half as intersting as Brian in my opinion. Anyway, great movie so I can't wait to catch up with the sequels!
I want to start by highlighting that the soundtrack of this movie is one of its greatest strengths and, in my opinion, perfect for the theme. It fits seamlessly with the Fast and Furious style, especially set in Tokyo. The character Han is simply amazing, and his role as a "mentor" to Sean worked really well. Considering that, in the timeline, this movie takes place after Fast and Furious 6 and all the events that happened there, it’s easy to understand and appreciate everything Han says, making the story even more meaningful.
Although the franchise’s main characters don’t appear, I think Sean and Neela are great, and their actors do a good job portraying them. The "villain," DK, might not be the most memorable, but I understand his importance within the context of Tokyo. On the other hand, the drift scenes and the overall concept of the film are fantastic. I've always found drifting visually stunning, and I think it fits perfectly with the Fast and Furious universe.
In the end, I believe this movie is highly underrated. When watched in chronological order, it makes more sense and becomes even better.
