This is a movie that was a staple of my childhood. Back then, this was utterly terrifying. I really believed there could be witches out there that wanted to snatch me up and do terrible things to me. This, by far, is the one movie that comes closest to the feeling that Roald Dahl's writing gave me as a kid.

Anjelica Huston gives her all as the head witch, it really is a glorious performance. Combined with excellent cuts between footage of real rats (easier to train than mice, so I get it) and puppetry by Henson. Even scenes without a cut where both are combined. Practicaly effects in camera that are gloriously well timed (look out for Anjelica Huston holding the mask in front of her head and then the camera swoops passed her assistant's head, just how effective just dropping something is to create a perfect illusion). And some genious use of different lenses for the perspective of the children as mice.

This movie needs to be applauded for it's simple and effective, but very smart movie making!

The new version had potential but it’s not so good next this movie. Once was enough and I went back to only watching this version.
The new probably is more faithful. I do like that this one has a good witch though. The ending just is better here too.

A classic film from the story of Roald Dahl. Love Rowan Atkinson in this, and Anjelica Huston is amazing!

Not what I was expecting but I had fun. The witch makeup is great and the mouse stuff didn't look terrible.

Still has some nostalgia from childhood after all these years but pretty sure I thought it was more spooky back then compared to the reality of it.

PG and not a strong R is wildly wicked. I remember watching this in school. I'm pretty sure they turned it off after 20 minutes because this is horrifying. Not only are the designs and effects good, but the camera work and acting is great. Anjelica plays evil like she genuinely was born evil. If it wasn't for the Mr. Bean cameos, she would've been charged with war crimes. The mice work is crazy too, I can't imagine how many takes it took. Emily Blunt needs to be in a remake of this when she hits her 60s because she looks just like the kids' grandma. I'm glad it stook to being a kids' tale with heavy lore.

No wonder this fabulous movie has become
a British cult classic.
It's so naughty and dark
and never could be recreated in such a way today,
and that makes me sad for the times we live in.
The pc,woke,sjw
cancel culture snowflake era.

Just watch
The 2020 retelling
of this movie if you
Need anymore proof.
(No guts no glory).

I was brought up
on the Witches book
at school and
The Demon Headmaster,
another classic.
I love this movie
the original
The Witches
And enjoy it many
Times now as an adult
Especially as I own it
on blu ray.
Angelica kills it she is
Perfect in the role,
Super charismatic
and so dark but funny
With it, I see why she
Landed the role as
Morticia in
The Adams Family.
Rowan does a great
Job but when does he not
And the cigar smoking
Grandmother
Is amazing.
The movie is so
Unique, one such as
Will never see the likes
Of again, watching
as an adult now I see
Just actually how Terrifying this movie is
And for me that's it's charm, I love stuff that
Wouldn't be allowed today,
And that is what makes this all year round watchable entertaining movie even more
Appealing.
