I would have given a higher score but Chris didn't punch any boulder during the movie, which is quite unrealistic.

The Resident Evil franchise isn't a stranger to film adaptation. It's been a thing since 2002. Unfortunately, none of them really felt like a true adaptation of the source material. Whether it be the godawful fanfics by Paul WS Anderson or the really bad attempt at combining two stories like Welcome to Raccoon City. RE just doesn't have a good track record when it comes to film.

The CG films are an exception. They're canon and present the characters as they are in the games. They're unapologetically Resident Evil, for better or for worse. The things I always disliked about this film is how they treat some of their legacy characters. Chris and Leon get to be at the forefront of these films. Yet iconic characters like Claire and Rebecca are put at wayside to be damsels in distress, when the games have showcased how capable they are. My biggest fear with Resident Evil: Death Island was that they were going to take the series most iconic female protagonist, Jill Valentine, and make her a damsel in distress.

Well, I'm happy to say that isn't case and that Jill is actually at forefront of the film and continuing her story from RE5. That's not to say everybody else in the film doesn't get their time to shine. Everyone has their moment, even characters like Claire and Rebecca who were treated so poorly in previous projects are given their moments. Leon and Chris still kick ass and make a pretty good team alongside Jill.

The action is great and the animation is solid. There are some references to prior RE games and CG movies, but they don't take up all the screen time like Welcome to Raccoon City and are merely there for story purposes. The interactions between characters are great. The most notable being between the franchises two most iconic leads, Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy. This is the first time in the series that we get to see these two work together and the banter between them is awesome.

This movie like the other CG projects is also unapologetically Resident Evil, for better and for worse. For better, because it's over the top and cheesy and feels right at home in the RE canon. For worse, because the story is rather predictable as it's mostly every RE story ever told and because the main villian is kinda dumb and his motivations are rather weak. Which sucks, because the past couple of RE games had some great villains with the Baker family and the 4 lords.

That being said, this is a film specifically made for RE fans. So while it may not find an audience outside of that crowd, I think us RE fans found a film that we will love. I know that I do.

Not as good as the second, Damnation, but much more polished than Vendetta. Film-wise, Death Island is a loose continuation of Vendetta (though you'll be glad to know Leon is restored to his former self), and from the games Jill's return follows in the wake of Resi 5.

Jill's character here is determined and endlessly capable, applying herself to the fullest as a direct consequence of the traumatic events in Resi 5. Her character's interactions with the others are a highlight for me, as she's a direct contrast to the Claire and Rebecca from the first three films who are similarly former fighters but put down their arms to fight bioterrorism from a decidedly different angle.

It will surprise no-one that Jill's relationship with Chris remains complicated. This isn't a series where anyone lives happily ever after, and much like Leon and Ada from Damnation (their coy interplay being a central highlight) we're once again left to imagination.

What's not left to imagination is how well these five lead characters play together. Staying true to their nature in the games as much as the animated film series, all five have a part to play, making them for the first time truly feel like a worthy team of varied and equally essential talents.

I couldn't finish without acknowledging the villain of this film: every critique of him in comments before this is deserved. His motivations are almost as bad as his conclusions. How is it this film series has genius level weapon merchants settling on infantile grand schemes? I should like to forget him as swiftly as possible and remember this film only for its protagonists and their escapades.

A motorbike chase, a massive prison brawl (including rail-hanging and wall-running), and several CQC scenes that keep things interesting without dragging on comically as in Vendetta.

It doesn't stand as an action/horror film on its own but for Resident evil series fans (either the animated films or that era of games) Death Island is a fun adventure with more of your favourites brought together than ever before. And all in a crisp 90 minutes. Here's hoping we get another in a few years.

It was awesome to see 5 main characters in the same movie fighting together. We didn't even get that in games (the closest we had was RE6). Beyond that, the story is nothing new tbh. At this point, the formula is pretty much the same: New strand of Virus T, G or any variation; a "wacky" way to infect the world, and our heroes coming to the rescue and ending it. What i think is nice is that in this animated movies, they keept them in the chronology of the games (this one aknowledging RE5 and 6). Again, nothing new at this point, but a good cinematic RE. Confortable 7 because of the characters.

P.D: When is Capcom going to do an "Avengers Endgame" movie or videogame with all the main characters fighting side by side? At this point, is all that's left

Always appreciate the photorealism and sleek combat of the Resident Evil series of animation movies. Enjoyed this one too.

I love Resident Evil as a franchise, but these movies are admittedly pretty hit or miss. Death Island seemed great conceptually, so my expectations were pretty high. All the characters we adore, together in one movie. Unfortunately, just an average entry that is pretty far from what it could have been.

Rating: 2.5/5 - 70% - Worth Watching

Like a New York bodega at 3am, it was a little bit trash in all the best ways and had everything I came for.

Sure, I won't remember this CGI fueled smorgasbord of shlock by the time the next one hits the screen, but that's true of my last fast food feast, and I'm sure I loved that, as well.

The best I've seen in CGI, much better than the Netflix series and the last movie series.
