I relate to Tosiek so much. Even though I’m non-binary, our journeys of self-discovery feel incredibly similar. The way he navigates his identity and finds ways to feel comfortable in his own skin really resonates with me. Those little moments when he does things that help him feel okay — I’ve lived those moments too, and it’s comforting to see that reflected in someone else’s story.
There is definitely something to criticize about Fanfic. The acting is not always convincing and believable. The teacher in this movie is such a horrible person that I don't think she would even get away with demeaning her students in Poland.
Also, the moment when Toska realizes he is a boy just by putting on a hoodie seemed a bit too simplistic.
Despite my criticism, I thought it was a good and important film. It clearly portrays the struggles someone faces when they don't fit the norm or the box that society thinks they should belong to. (Online) bullying, physical violence, lack of understanding, and unwanted comments ("stop playing dress-up," "you used to be such a pretty girl") are all depicted in this film, albeit in a simple and cliché manner. Nevertheless, it still had an impact on me, and I believe it is a suitable film for young people and anyone who doesn't understand these issues.
