Public Enemies

In my opinion, the best mobster movie since the last best one. They say you could've recognized Dillinger just from his smile.

_Public Enemies_ is a thrilling crime drama that offers great insight into the notorious Dillinger story. Johnny Depp's portrayal of the charismatic bank robber is top-notch and captures the essence of the character. The film is packed with plenty of action, making it an intense and exciting viewing experience.

Johnny Depp is excellent as John Dillinger – intense, believable, and completely in control of the role. Christian Bale portrays Melvin Purvis in a smaller but still noteworthy part, delivering solid acting throughout. It’s also interesting to see how J. Edgar Hoover is depicted – not as the powerful FBI figure most people associate with the name, but as the paper-pushing administrator he actually was. A bureaucrat more than a field man, which feels accurate.

The Dillinger gang is presented as what they were labeled – Public Enemy No. 1. The film does a good job of staying close to real events: the wooden gun escape, the cross-state chases, and Dillinger’s repeated, almost absurd, prison breaks are all included with care.

Billie Holiday’s “Love Me or Leave Me” adds a tasteful touch to the soundtrack, standing out as one of the more memorable musical moments. And while the film delivers strong performances and engaging action scenes, the pacing overall is uneven. It drags at times, loses focus, and the long runtime (2 hours and 20 minutes) doesn’t help. There’s also very little shown about how the FBI evolved during this time or how evidence was actually gathered – a missed opportunity.

The ending feels underwhelming, especially since we don’t get much insight into what happened to Melvin Purvis or Billie Frechette after Dillinger’s death. Still, the historical accuracy, Depp’s performance, and certain well-crafted sequences raise the overall experience.

He lost all his friends, yet he’s still resisting.

Those cops who tortured her deserved punishment — maybe even death — but they didn’t get what they deserved.

John Dillinger was a real person. This is based on his story. The woman betrayed him, which is truly sad. But he was incredibly brave, walking around so freely despite everything. It was also nonsense but it was old times.

The women who betrayed was lover according to some real info. So he was having multiple girlfriends i think.

I give 7 10 points.

A solid movie about the famous American gangster John Dillinger. The good cat saves the movie from mediocrity. Good entertainment.

A phenomenal film, that leaves you on the edge of your seats, and filled with emotions.

Not bad, felt like they didn’t really set up character/story background and rushed through it. Depp/Bale do a good job. Pretty wild that it is true story

The shootouts were great. Really well done and tense. Everything else was kind of dull and boring. A little too long. Johnny Depp was pretty decent too. It doesn't look like Michael Mann can live up to some of his earlier work.
