**Let's do the math.** Absolutely gorgeous. The writing, acting, cinematography, all so good. Everyone disappeared in their roles with an A+ story. Celine Song is 2/2, but this didn't reach Past Lives level. _Worth watching in cinemas._

Loved it. Convinced my friend who never goes to the cinema to go with me, and she also loved it, so that is the biggest compliment coming from her lol.

Such a unique take on love.

I especially love the short story of the two cavepeople that was intertwined into the main story; it comes full circle so wonderfully.

I had an ex who gave me a hard time for making the comment that love is fake. While there was more nuance to my comment, that overall idea seems consistent with this movie's theme, with Dakota Johnson's entire profession built on the idea that relationships aren't built on love, they are built on math. Whether you want to call it cynical or practical, this less common perspective made for a unique spin on the romance genre. Of course, the real revelation is that even relationships allegedly built on love are actually built on math, it's just subconscious math. Dakota Johnson's character is just bringing that math to the surface and leveraging it. In any case, the theme and set-up to the story are strong, hitting some interesting and unexpected beats along the way. There's a couple turns that don't quite feel earned, but strong dialogue and performances and interesting characters kept me invested throughout.

the most unrealistic thing about this movie is being put in a position where you have to choose between Pedro pascal and Chris Evans

A good decent one time watch movie. They should’ve emphasised more on her past memories with John and compared them with her current experiences with Harry to better reflect her choice in the end. Pedro and Chris should’ve gotten more screen on time. As Dakota’s character isn’t all that interesting, she’s just another human after all. More emphasis on her past and current memories should’ve been made which would be key for the movie as she’s the main character we follow. 7/10

(And no, this movie is nothing about sleeping with the rich guy)

I bet this movie was inspired by the viral TikTok "I'm looking for a man in Finance". 😂

Dakota Johnson is well-suited to the role, and she's backed by a strong supporting cast. As the title suggests, Materialists follows characters obsessed with seeking validation from society—a portrayal of people blinded by superficial values. While the story is sharply reflective of our culture, it doesn’t offer anything particularly new, shocking, or surprising. It plays more like a documentary of the world we already live in.

Definitely not perfect but it was thought provoking.

The dialogue felt a little bit more "stage play"-y than natural dialogue. It's interesting if you consider it a kind of modern essay on dating, read on the screen by the characters.

It had several funny and several delightful moments.

One of the major subplots didn't feel like it fit the overall movie (it should have been either a much bigger or much smaller part).

For everyone comparing it to _Past Lives_, even though it does involve a love triangle, the tone and treatment of the material are very different; it's a very different sort of movie.

Dakota Johnson is far and away the most nepo a nepo baby ever nepo’ed. This is essentially a rom com that is ashamed to be a rom com so they try their damndest to make it more. Not terrible but could have been better

Started off strong but mellowed out throughout the movie and ending. Good watch but wish it finished as strong as the beginning

I was really enjoying it until about half way through it when something bad happens at work and she calls her ex. I knew it was going down quick when she did that.
This is a movie that had to have been written by someone who is rich.
No one who has to struggle day to day with money would have ever chosen the way she did in this movie AND she says she wants to quit her job not even having another job lined up?!! No! This movie lacks basic realism.
I could see if they wrote the rich guy as an abuser, mean or with some other inexcusable fault but he was a genuinely nice guy, VERY attractive, rich and very kind to her … and she left him to be with a struggling actor who can’t afford parking. In the real world, no amount of love fixes how you feel when you cry yourself to sleep at night because you don’t know how to pay your bills. No amount of love can calm your anxiety about the possibility that one day you may end up homeless because you don’t have anything for retirement and you already live one unexpected even away from disaster.
This movie was okay but honestly with the economy being the way it is at this moment, the message of this movie is kind of tone deaf. She wants to give up the rich, responsible, nice guy for the poor, starving actor living with three roommates AND she wants to quit her job too. Give me a break!! Anyone living in the real world, watching this movie is going to find it totally inauthentic.
That said, I love all three actors but the premise really was disappointingly unbelievable.
If I put that lack of sense in the story aside, I can enjoy it like I do old movies that maybe I can’t fully relate to.
