Even though the the whole plot is silly I don’t care I do love this film grew up watching it remember just bingeing it over and over again and still feel the same way about it now.
It’s just so nostalgic to me love the vibe of it not surprising as it’s a Joe Dante film, Gremlins is one of my favourite films this kinda has the same silly fun ways of that film which I love.
The story is very fun the commando’s vs the Gorgonites Chip hazard is such a badass character he’s a brutal little shit though 😂 his team just get blown to bits, absolutely love Archer and the Gorgonites there quite funny love ocula never thought I’d find a eye cute lol, Slamfist is actually adorable weird name btw 😅and insaniac definitely has the correct name he’s crazy!!!. “Greetings Alan now shut up”
When the Commando’s are in Christy’s room bringing the dolls to life to be apart of the army was definitely a standout scene some really funny scenes they might have been crazier than the commando’s. “If you can’t accessorize, Pulverize!”
The fight scene was really fun to watch aswell the rivalry between Chip hazard and archer makes the film more interesting aswell.
I don’t get why this got average reviews to me it’s a nostalgic classic part of me would want to see a reboot as could do a lot more with the plot and characters but maybe this just left alone as it’s perfect just as it is.

Now I won't lie, this definitely is a silly movie but it is still quite a fun watch if you ask me. From a certain point of view it can be seen as a clever movie too. I don't know for sure if it was intentional but I really love the way the movie's self aware satirical humor pokes fun at the fact that war has been merchandised and aimed at children tons of times throughout history. The movie itself actually says "Don't call it violence, call it action; kids love action, it sells!". Even the movie's marketing gives all its attention to the antagonist soldier toys instead of the Gorgonites. It all really got me thinking about how terrible the idea of glorifying war to children is, how societies have tried to militarize the minds of people from a young age. The absurdity of the movie's action also got me wondering if this was a way of saying that war violence is ridiculous.
Unfortunately thanks to sponsors' meddling the mood of the movie can feel like it's all over the place. While it was always intended to be a crazy gritty teen movie the director ended up being forced to make the movie more kid-friendly, they even told the director this way too late and a lot of child unfriendly nightmare fuel was left in the movie. But despite that I find it to be a very fun "turn your brain off and enjoy" kind of movie.
I also want to say that for a late 90s movie, the CGI in it didn't age that bad in my opinion.
This one will forever hold a place in my heart. It might not be great, but this one hits all of the nostalgia buttons for me and I will forever love it. I remember when it was released and the toys were everywhere. I am surprised that this was not turned into a bigger franchise, but I am happy we at least got this movie!

The CGI in this movie was way ahead of it's time.
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid, I used to watch it on repeat. I remember relating to it sinse I have the same name as the main character which was a rarity (and still is) for me. I was afraid of rewatching it now because I wasn't sure if i'd still like it as an adult.
***Small Soldiers*** still holds up as a great 90s action flick with good comedy and some great action sequences. I'm surprised I wasn't scared of this as a child, some of the visuals are kinda disturbing and there's certainly some light horror elements especially with the Barbie sequences (which are some of the best in the movie). So many funny one-liners. Fabulous design for the Gorgonites and the Commando Elite, I would love to own one. The third act is what makes this so worthwhile, it's absolutely wild and filled with creative ideas, ideas that would probably come out of a child's mind (in a good way). A spectacle of animatronics practical effects and CGI that looks a bit dated. The story is simplistic and the acting is hit and miss.
***Small Soldiers*** is easily rewatchable and absolutely deserves to be seen by all ages. A more mature *Toy Story*.
Buffy Doll's were creepy! :)
Lots of fun, as usual for Dante. It's a great kids movie, that they're still sure to love. Surprisingly the effects even hold up, even though the movie is really a product of its time.
The good toys can be pretty corny. Other than that the movie is entertaining. Especially since it has a Gremlins feel to it. Due to Joe Dante.
Small Soldiers was also Phil Hartman’s last film unfortunately.
Fun to watch growing up for the CGI of its time.
"We are the Commando Elite. Everything else is just a toy!"
Not on the level of Gremlins but still a very fun Joe Dante vehicle. Took awhile to get going, always love seeing Kirsten Dunst, Tommy Lee Jones as Chip Hazard was epic, run time could've been a bit shorter, enjoyed the character designs and I enjoyed the action.
Can't believe I hadn't seen Small Soldiers in yet. I might have caught bit and pieces on tv before because the scene with the "small" soldier trying to hang on the bike looked so familiar and the Spice Girls scene and damn, all those bald barbies were creepy!
Anyway Small Soldiers is a fun film and nostalgia must be big with people who've watched this growing up. Wish I saw it 24 years ago. Would've been such a great experience as a 9 year old!
