WAR IS OVER!

Set in an alternate WWI reality where a senseless war rages on, two soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict play a joyful game of chess. A heroic carrier pigeon delivers the soldiers' chess moves over the battlefield as the fighting escalates. Neither soldier knows his opponent as the game and the war builds to its climatic final move. Whoever wins the game, one thing is for certain: there are no winners in war.
War is bad, and if we stopped it, that would be good. "War Is Over!" doesn't go any deeper than this overly simplistic realization. It is also clear from the beginning where this animated short film is going. But when the eponymous song kicked in, I still had to laugh. The transition is really jarring. The only thing that saves the movie is the decent animation style, even if it reminded me a little of the Telltale video games. Overall, however, I believe this is the weakest film nominated in the short film category at the 2024 Oscars.
