It wasn't as scary as I had anticipated but, it had some deep messages especially when someone experiences death of a cherished love one. 😢
One of the better Horror movies I've watched this year. I like what they did with this and I enjoyed the pacing. I think it's a strong case of why you should never pray to demons. God is love and God is life.
I agree with @Chris that this is one the better horror movies this year in that Danielle Deadwyler is pretty much perfectly cast as Ramona, an undiagnosed, but probably clinically depressed woman whose husband moves her and her two kids from the city, out into the country to what he THOUGHT was their SHARED vision of an idyllic life, when in actuality, it was only his dream. She hates the farm, the kids, the dog, the chickens and feels put upon by the whole thing, which starts to fall apart when he, according to her purported version, crashed their truck on the way home from a night out, killing him and busting up her leg pretty good, thus her being in a full length leg brace at the start and for most of the movie.
Meanwhile Estella Kahiha plays young "Rudy Huxtableish" Annie with the apropos amount of cuteness, while Payton Jacksons Taylor kept me yelling "Slap the shizz out of that smart azz Mofo" and "beat the black off that fool" as MY Mother would have done if I had EVER acted the way he did toward his screen Mom. What a difference a generation or two makes. He keeps thinking he's "the man of the house", when, he's really just a rebellious punk.
Okwui Okpokwasili is the titular "woman in black" who shows in their front yard up as Ramona spirals trying to cope with all the additional despair is thrust upon her at her husbands demise. It is unsettlingly sinister, in that she just sit in a chair, yet from time to time edges closer and closer to the family home. When confronted by Ramona, she tells her "I came because you prayed for me to come" "Rut Ruoh Shaggy!!
Ramona then seems to know who she is and tries to protect her family from a big secret that the woman spills to the angsty son when he, as Pops used to say starts smelling his own pee, and decides to confront the woman with a rifle. This leads to the truth being revealed, and the hair raising confrontation of the third act.
All appears to be resolved to the good, however, if you were paying attention to details about midway through the movie, you realize it's a "twist" ending, right before the twist is definitively revealed.
Solid Blumhouse effort, with a minimum of gore or special effects.
This film is about mental health and I liked it , it's nice
This is a well-crafted and moving treatise on grief that resonated with me.
Pretty goddamn devastating. Surprised to see the hot takes on here when people eat this shit up when NEON or A24 are shown at the start of it
at first, I thought it is not good, but it turned out to be interesting.
Started off good but lost me
The Woman in the Yard is worth watching. While it doesn’t break new ground, it effectively delivers an unsettling and thought provoking experience.
'The Woman in the Yard' has a metaphor for all to see, though fails to craft anything else of note. For such a short movie (not even 90 mins), this noticeably dragged for me. It gets a little interesting towards the end, but even then doesn't make up for the meandering set-up.
Danielle Deadwyler is a decent lead, I can't say this'll stay at the front of my memory when thinking of her filmography though; 'The Piano Lesson' remains the one, so far. As usual when a film falls flat in most departments, I don't hold any blame with the cast anyway.
Most of the 'scares' come via cheap jumps, rather than anything truly uncomfortable. In fairness, there is one unsettling scene at the death but that's all I've got in terms of praise. With just one location and a few characters, greater writing and visuals were needed - for me, at least.
