The Remains of the Day

A rule-bound head butler's world of manners and decorum in the household he maintains is tested by the arrival of a housekeeper who falls in love with him in post-WWI Britain. The possibility of romance and his master's cultivation of ties with the Nazi cause challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.

This is by far my favorite Anthony Hopkins performance. Sure, the glittery performances are the ones that tend to resonate more (like his performance in Silence of the Lambs), but I think it is so hard to nail a character that requires a subtle and understated touch. The character says so little and so much at the same time. The movie may be a bit slow for some, but for those with patience the reward is amazing. I could have scene Hopkins and Thompson interact on a screen all day long. I also very much enjoyed the commentary on the differences between classes - I thought that was extremely well done.

Great performances and an interesting combination of story elements, but you can tell this is a novel adaptation because it ends up feeling like _too_ much story for a movie. The story is all there, but some aspects feel a bit rushed/thin and I suspect the novel fleshes everything out significantly. If they were adapting this today I wouldn't be surprised if they did it as a mini series. With that said, still a worthwhile exploration of romantic and professional regret.

Hard to match the book, but it does well enough. Was disappointed with how significant moments from Ishiguro's novel were altered and/or excluded, but what is here is excellent. Great acting across the board especially - Anthony Hopkins does an amazing job as Mr. Stevens.

I felt the romance angle was undercooked. Nothing happens between them until the book scene, more than an hour into the movie.
Having said that, all the other stuff around that is great.
