Calvaire

A few days before Christmas, traveling entertainer Marc Stevens is stuck at nightfall in a remote wood in the swampy Hautes Fagnes region of Liège when his van breaks down. An odd chap who's looking for a lost dog then leads Marc to a shuttered inn.
It feels strange from the start of the movie. The dark and depressing atmosphere, set mainly in a forest and a village, gives the narrative a rustic appearance. The cinematography is atmospheric, cold and often blurred by a constant fog. The story, which begins with deep sadness, evolves into increasingly claustrophobic and dense situations, with the characters moving from melancholy to degradation, gradually losing their sense of humanity, until it culminates in absolute chaos. The film's sound oscillates from gloomy to chaotic, while peculiar camera angles intensify the discomfort. This results in disturbing moments and a constant feeling of heaviness and pessimism.
