Fierce, ramshackle and psychedelic: this in a nutshell is Ralph Bakshi's first feature film in his transposition of Robert Crumb's comic strip of the same name, _Fritz the Cat_. Despite its many flaws (first and foremost, a jagged rhythm that is difficult to appreciate) this animated film is to be considered a jewel for its innovative power. The first animated film entirely dedicated to adults, _Fritz the Cat_ deals with some of the hottest issues of the US in the 1960s in an uncensored manner. While displeasing everyone (conservatives, progressives and the author of the stripes himself, Crumb, who distanced himself from the film) Bakshi managed to win an audience and a notoriety that would accompany him to this day from his first important work. A cult film destined to remain so for its unsettling, irreverent and adversarial power.

Bakshi's debut isn't for everybody, for sure. Would probably stir up all kinds of opposition if it came out today. Notable for being the first X-rated animated feature and for bringing R. Crumb's comic insanity to life in all it's irreverence. Not a great film, but an interesting take on the times.

Please give it a chance. It's a lot more than the notorious cartoon porn it's been labeled as. It's a fun romp through the deprived New York of the 60's, except this time with cartoon characters!

It has aged quite badly.
