The Wedding Banquet

Charming and with some lovely emotional depth. Great performances and characters. I laughed a few times and cried a few times. Haven’t seen the original yet but I do feel this avoided some expectations the story set up—in a positive way. All the main and supporting characters felt like they had something to contribute and I loved each one for different reasons. Super enjoyable and would absolutely want to watch it again.

Two couples, one big secret, and a banquet that turns everything upside down. This film dives into the complexities of love, family expectations, and cultural traditions. It's a heartfelt exploration of how we navigate personal desires against societal norms.

A competent queer drama. Not a comedy.

I wished that they gave the movie a different name to avoid the comparison and expectations.

The grandma was the standout character. The drag queen on the poster was hardly in it.

The Wedding Banquet is a story about culture and identity, how these two terms correlate and how we navigate life with tradition and expectations we and others place upon our shoulders. It is also a story about how family goes far beyond bloodlines.

Bowen Yang isn't the best at expressing big emotions through his acting, Lily Gladstone's character was underused in my opinion, some jokes just didn't land, and the straight drunken sex between queer best friends that results in pregnancy storyline is something that should've been left out of the plot, but Youn Yuh-jung, on the other hand, is a class act, a master of acting, carried a good portion of the movie for me and said so much while expressing so little.

Overall, this was a very entertaining and heartwarming experience. This film was far from perfect, but it was good, definitely rewatchable, and delivered many beautiful messages.
