Summer of 69

In an effort to land the guy she's been pining after since grade school, Abby hires a local stripper named Santa Monica to teach her everything she needs to know about confidence and sex.

I was surprised that this movie is as watchable as it is. After all, this story has been told countless times and this version doesn't bring anything new to the table. What it does offer is some great chemistry by the two leads. I've wanted to like Chloe Fineman for so long - it was nice to see her slip into a role rather than over-act trying to be someone else.

This is a raunchy coming of age trainwreck that's more provocative than laugh out loud funny. Chloe Fineman's Santa Monica is a highlight, bringing some much needed attitude to the mess. Sam Morelos's Abby is relatable, but the script often feels like it's trying too hard to be cool. The film's tone is all over the place, veering wildly from cringe worthy to surprisingly sweet. Maybe the younger crowd will eat it up, but for me, it felt like a misfire. Still, it's undeniably authentic in its own messy way.
