Detective Chinatown 1900

surely it’s another film for box office only , for it shows a simple detective story ( so you can easily enjoy the film without any complex reasoning)with much patriots’s sweets.

While I usually enjoy the Detective Chinatown movies, and the actors in them, this one left me slightly disappointed because the story doesn't really fit the whodunnit/comedy genre the series is known for. This would have been great as an epic centred on the trials of immigrant Chinese labourers and their journey from, and relationship to, pre-Revolutionary China. Patriotism, identity, racism. This movie has that packed in but, to my mind, comedic elements that really throw it off kilter. A lot of the characters had quite touching and tragic (heroic) stories which I really enjoyed but I also felt they were a little cheapened by the need to entertain in a blockbustery way.

As a side note, the English spoken in this movie was atrocious in many scenes. So many Chinese movies absolutely fail in delivering scenes with proper English accents and this is no exception. Thank god for subtitles.
