Captain Ron

When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

Such an easy watching movie. It does nothing particular may good nor bad, but it’s perfectly enjoyable. The cast clearly had a good time making this one and it shows!

Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching

A 90's comfort movie. It's silly, but not too silly and it's just easy to rewatch when you just want to have a good time.

Splashy adventures in the Caribbean as a mild-mannered big city businessman suddenly inherits a yacht and talks his reluctant family into a spontaneous month-long sea voyage. Martin Short is the oft-frustrated family man, whipped and stifled by the corporate world, who almost instantly regrets hiring his polar opposite (a mostly shirtless, mulleted, eye-patched Kurt Russell) to teach his family how to control their new toy. Most of the fun lies in watching Russell do whatever he wants - flirting with the wife and daughter, teaching the son to drink and gamble, pushing the boat to the point of disintegration - which rankles the father who sees himself being replaced by a newer, hipper model.

There's nothing world-shattering here. It's a simple recipe that coasts on easy laughs and nice scenery, but at least it has a unique angle and a decent amount of heart. Short is vanilla and snobby as the leading man, prickly and unlikable, but that's how the character is written. Russell, on the other hand, pushes an overshadowing support role, one which could've easily been just as grating, into something more personable and endearing. We buy into Captain Ron's world philosophy because the actor also buys into it.

As formulaic, predictable family comedies go, one could do far worse. Bonus points to those who choose to lean into the winking urban legend that this is how Snake Plissken relaxes between escapes.

This was tonight's tvT selection (weekly Tuesday viewing get together). It was this or Down and Out in Beverly Hills. Honestly we maybe shoulda gonna with Down n Out. Apparently it's known the world over because nick Nolte eats dog food TWICE in TWO different ways! That's what the IMDB trivia says. Anyway, Captain ron...such a bore! And why does Martin short get so bent out of shape?! Ron is not the wild guy you think he's gonna be. And Martin shorts final straw is when he's jealous that Ron is with a local lady. Martin is married!! To a Mary Kay place that is nude by the way in this movie. And gets her ear sucked by Short. Weird. Boring. And as pointed out by the crowd, lack of music.
