Masterpiece, I love the atmosphere and the music by Air is stellar. Has a vibe similar to “Drive (2011)” IMHO
A movie to see. Intense from beginning to end.
Adolescence, difficult stage, stupid defeat.
As soon as we see the title it suggests that you are going into a depressing film and this certainly is one. With a mysterious, melancholic and sometimes haunting atmosphere Sofia Coppola was able to do a solid debut with her The Virgin Suicides.
This tells the story of five beautiful girls, full of life are forbidden to live their adolescence in a normal way by the restricted orders of their religious parents.
Is difficult to talk about this film without spoiling much and I don't wanna do it for the ones who haven't seen it yet. I will just say that freedom is one of the best things we can have in life. Living in cloistered is not easy or good for our mental health.
The performances are solid from all of the actors, it's visually beautiful and has a great the soundtrack.
I think I liked it. It's slow but that's what it's trying to do. I loved the music choices. Kirsten Dunst is good.
I always kind of cringe at people saying 'the book was better' but honestly... the book was better. Way better.
The movie has a stellar cast. The girls really look as I pictured them but the way the story is told in the movie skips over a lot of crucial moments.
The best example is Mary surviving her attempt (just like Cecilia) only to die later like her sisters.
What the movie does capture very well is the vibe of the book. The way its shot, the music, it's a visually beautiful movie.
Welp, guess I should have expected that
Quite a strong commentary on the romanticization of purity culture and the masking of (religious) abuse under the guise of keeping women innocent.
The movie might feel like “superficial” storytelling to some, but that’s the whole point: What we saw of the sisters and their life is all that those teenage boys thought of them, as their understanding and interest in them did not go beyond the idea of loving this perfect innocent girl.
From writer/director Sofia Coppola comes the period drama _The Virgin Suicides_. Based on an acclaimed novel, the story follows four sisters who, in the wake of their young sister’s suicide, struggle to deal with their oppressive parents who attempt to shut them off from the outside world. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods, and Kathleen Turner, the cast is quite impressive. The soundtrack is also pretty good, and the film does an excellent job creating the look and feel of the ‘70s. However, the storytelling’s a bit weak and doesn’t have a clear focus. The Virgin Suicides is an interesting film, but it tries to do too much.
so pretentious. oh there were these girls but they were really pretty and blonde and we were all obsessed with them and when a guy got a chance to date one of them we all fucking competed to help out and go on dates with the sisters!! oh but they were also sad because their mum was mean and grounded them and they were just such t0rtured soulz!!! but then every single one of them decided to kill themselves and even when we were fourty we regretted not doing every single thing perfect on the date because every single one of them were the dream girlfriends of everybody in dis universe!!!!
like fuck off.
they even tried to read their own mail the way the girls would have like holy hell. also. cameron diaz is like hey come over and we can escape because she wanted to have people she was barely acquainted with find the bodies. because you know how you really want some neighbours who are obsessed with you to do something as intimate and sensitive as find the corpses of more than half your damn family. even though they were supposedly angry at the parents or whatever the fuck was supposed to be happening
