Even on a second watch this is amazing. The emotions feel real. Brie Larson is perfect.
I love movies like this! This movie was fantastic. Short Term 12 is a simple, beautiful story. It is wonderfully acted and is just beautifully told. You can really care about the characters, and I really sugest this to anyone who hasn't seen it, it is soo good!
The second film that I went to see on Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival. I was really interested about seeing it since the moment I first saw the trailer and then because of some of the great reviews that I read about it. All were totally true!
Short Term 12 is the kind of film that provides you all kinds of emotions throughout the story. So powerful, so deep, so emotional!
Short Term 12 tells the story about a house, with the same name, where delinquent children stay while their families or the state tries to figure it out what to do with them. Most of the children are damaged in some way and the portrayal of them is done in such an honest way.
I laughed hard but I also cried. There are such powerful moments that it's impossible for you not to feel touched by them, and that's what makes this film so believable. You know that unfortunately all of the situations that those children in the film are passing through, many real children are passing them in their lifes right now.
Brie Larson plays one of the workers in the house and she is absolutely amazing, her performance is stunning! But all the rest of the cast is also great, adults and children.
Overall, amazing direction, amazing writing and amazing acting. Simply an amazing film that will leave you with a smile on your face.
See it!
A tough, touching, and humorous look at a youth foster/psych home and its staff. It would have been very easy for this movie to slide into triteness and over-saccharine lessons, but outside of a few moments, it always feels grounded and real. A large part of that is thanks to the children actors, so often a detriment, they truly shine in this movie. Especially strong is the young man who plays Marcus, he may have big things ahead of him. The intimate camera work and natural feel to scenes add to the sense that you are in the world with these characters, and it rewards you in an emotional way. The connections and empathy you build are more than enough for me to overcome any of the writing flaws, though there aren't many to begin with. An incredible film, I'm excited to see what the writer/director has in the future.
Maybe Brie Larson's best work and that's saying a LOT. Kaitlyn Dever was also great. They both did so well at communicating using facial expressions and subtlety. Fantastic movie.
A raw and heady drama that doesn't lose touch with its humanity or delve so far into the somber material that it feels like a drag. In a performance that catapulted her to greater visibility, Brie Larson plays Grace, supervisor-cum-therapist to a small houseful of troubled youths. Grace seems to know the right approach to penetrating even the sturdiest veneer, but that understanding stems from similar incidents in her own past that she's never truly addressed. It can often seem easier to show others the way than to do the same for yourself, I suppose.
Surrounding Larsen is an excellent set of supporting efforts, helmed by John Gallagher Jr. as her big-hearted secret boyfriend/coworker, but the real show-stealers are the kids themselves. Each touched with a turgid, tragic set of challenges all their own, they succeed at portraying mistrust, resentment, anger, helplessness... and, strikingly, an innate sense of community. Their complexities are the keys to this story, gateway to a dark world that many of us would never dare to explore on our own.
Efficient, emotional, intense but not oppressive - tension-breakers arrive in all the right moments - this was a wonderful surprise, and something that's bound to stick with me for some time.
Heartbreaking, superb with phenomenal acting perfomance from Brie Larson! Dont miss this one!
Just...wow. This was such an amazing movie. It was funny, sad, heartfelt, and touching in all the right places. The story was well written and just felt so real and natural. I would definitely recommend everyone to give this a watch.
This movie manages to take a closer look at a group of kids in a group home, and the people taking care of them every day, without feeling like coming from a place of pity or like gawking at the broken kids and their story. Sure, their stories might be heartbreaking (the ones we get to know anyways), and they may have problems from it, but it somehow manages to feel like a look at a complicated big family or community, and it's great.
This one took me by surprise, I only discovered it by looking through the filmography of Kaitlyn Dever, but this cast is packed with talented people, a lot of who are now deservedly much bigger names.
