A must watch. This piece is a fictional war drama with docudrama elements that comes together into a very raw vision of the lead up to, outbreak of, and aftermath of nuclear war.
The film knows when to be raw, and when to leave the rest to your imagination. While certainly dated, the films message is not lost, and if anything, feels more relevant than ever. Its certainly a hard watch at points, but the raw and slightly unsettling feeling is what's required to communicate the severity of what the director was exploring.
Films like this stick with the right kind of person, and it certainly stuck with me. Movies like this need to be required watching for anyone considering a life in politics.
Still as fucking terrifying as it was when I first saw it.
Essential and depressing viewing, especially recommended for those who think the use of nuclear weapons tactically would be a good idea. Forget the establishing scenario, set in recession-hit 1980's Britain, athough there are fascinating glimpses of social history. Long disappeared shop names, such as BHS & Woolworths, the daily delivery of milk to the door and the CRT TV.
Society in the 2020s is far more interconnected and hence vulnerable. Watch 'Threads' and be grateful that it didn't happen. Be depressed that, 40 years later, something like it remains possible.
A harsh and harrowing exploration of the events that would follow a nuclear attack. Extremely impressive, in it's authenticity and quality, especially considering it was made for the BBC in the 80s. It's dark, depressing and grim.
Impressive and very realistic movie about the effects of a nuclear war. I thought we would start immediately in that apocalyptic world, so I was happy the movie took some time to show us what caused it and how it evolved.
Not a fun watch ofcourse but I think it's a very interesting one.
If this movie was made in 2020+, with a big budget. It would surely win an Oscar. Such a powerful scenario.
Considering this film was made 40 years ago, on a small budget, it is really good. Very depressing to watch though. A remake would be an interesting idea.
A documentary style movie about a nuclear holocaust is brutal and at times uncomfortable to watch. The acting doesn't have to be perfect as its supposed to be real, the effects are dated but at the time of its release would likely have been a rough watch.
