Moonstruck

37-year-old Italian-American widow Loretta Castorini believes she is unlucky in love, and so accepts a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Johnny, even though she doesn't love him. When she meets his estranged younger brother Ronny, an emotional and passionate man, she finds herself drawn to him. She tries to resist, but Ronny, who blames his brother for the loss of his hand, has no scruples about aggressively pursuing her while Johnny is out of the country. As Loretta falls for Ronny, she learns that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance.

Note: I still love this film. Some of that is for sentimental reasons regarding how I came to first experience it. That typed, some of the content isn't as kosher as I remembered it being... and one of the main events that occurs in the film isn't something I'm keen about. That typed, as mentioned, I love this and it'll always hold a special place in my heart.

This is a classic. A gentle comedy filled with warmth and accessible humour. Watched it with my girlfriend in 2024. Timeless.

_Cher is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person._

With the passing of Olympia Dukakas, I decided that I need to sit down and watch this movie. (Yes, I am REALLY late to the game).
First of all, there needs to be a warning - do not watch on an empty stomach. Go out to the nearest Mom and Pop Italian restaurant, get a family sized order of take out, throw in some fresh baked bread, and then sit down to watch this film.
Seriously - watching this, I was jonesing for a Bird's Nest breakfast (never consider putting red peppers on it), various breads/ loafs of bread, minestrone soup, a steak, and all kinds of pasta dishes....
Ok, that being said, this is a slow film. I can see why my friends back in the day had only seen it because "______ dragged me to see it. On our date". (I remember those days - oh the bad films I saw with my Ex). It is to the point - widowed lady, Loretta, gets engaged to whipped man, Johnny,, who has to go visit his dying mama. He asked his new fiance to go talk to his brother, Ronny, and patch things up. Except the fiance and the brother hit it off. And fall in love. And have to find a way to tell the older brother.
Enter the parents - and extended family. I like the old man - he loves his dogs so much. (I was afraid, at one point, he was going to end up passing away while out walking the dogs on evening). The Uncle and Aunt are great - the moon re-ignites a passion for them. The parents - well, Dad is one thing and the Mom is...well, she is annoying. VERY annoying. But you got to love her.
And finally, there is John Mahoney- who has a pattern of falling for younger women, only to have them break up with him over dinner. And then, one night, he meets Rose - and try as me might, he cant seduce her. She loves her husband - even if he is cheating on her
Not as great as I thought it would be. I heard it's a kind of classic, but I didn't see it. The timing was strange - it's almost impossible to go to in Italy and back in under two days and not be completely exhausted, yet Johnny was barely winded. Cage's script was strange, very strange, especially when he and Loretta first met. How did she not just run away from that nonsense right away? And who really says they are in love after one night? Was it an 80s thing? I adore Cher and most of her roles, but this one just didn't do her justice.

I can't believe this movie won three Academy awards and was also nominated for best picture.

The ending where everyone got what they wanted felt like a cop-out.

I wasn't that invested in the characters' lives.
